Introducing Producer Fund I

Introducing Producer Fund I

This is the inaugural "Film Fund Friday" dispatch. I'll be sending out weekly updates to those participating in the fund as well as those who want to follow along, receive updates, and even learn more about this industry.

As it's the first, we should probably start with what is Producer Fund I?

Producer Fund I is a $10M fund to produce 10 independent movies over the next ~4 years.

Thesis

The thesis for the investments is to produce movies that change people for good:

  • The audience
  • The filmmakers
  • The investors
  • and the industry at large

I began raising this fund in the midst of one of the worst seasons in the film industry. The Writers Guild of America had been on strike with the studios and the Screen Actor's Guild followed later in the summer.

This didn't worry me, it emboldened me.

It was a call to action - the creatives in this industry wanted a fair deal, better working conditions, and to participate in the upside of their work.

That's where the Producer Fund came from.

Each movie will be made with the thesis in mind. We'll make movies that change people, spark conversations, and create a library of beloved films.

The filmmakers - from the producers to the production assistants - will be partners in the film. They will have an equity stake in every production they work on so they can participate in the upside just as the "above the line" and the investors do.

The investors in the fund will get a unique opportunity to participate in a de-risked portfolio of films, diversify their investments, and have an impact on the world through these films.

The industry will see that there's a different - dare I say better - way to produce films. To be fair and equitable with the creative talent that's working on the project. To be budget-conscious, to seek out leverage wherever possible to create outsized results. We'll show that you can take less from others and make more because of the new environment that takes care of everyone on the project, not just "the money people".

If you'd like to get into the details, they're all at producer.fund.
